Crop Walk - 2010

Hello Troop 461 Scouts and Parents

Troop 461 has been active supporters of the Durham CROP hunger walk, having been one of the largest fundraiser among non-profit (non-church) organizations for the last 2 years. 25% of funds raised in this walk are used to fight local hunger, while the remaining 75% go to fight world hunger.

I have set up a BSA Troop 461 team page for us to coordinate our efforts again this year. A link to this team page appears at the bottom of this message. From this page, you can email friends, family and others and ask them for their support. They can use credit cards  to pledge directly to CROP and you will be credited.

I have set a fundraising goal of $5000 for the troop because I believe that we can exceed this number. However, it will take effort from everyone. Even if you cannot walk, you still can ask for donations for the Troop and/or support others in the Troop.

One important aspect of Scouting is service to the world and local community, and this is an excellent chance for us all to demonstrate that Spirit.

I look forward to everyone's participation in this great event.

Best

Tim

News & Notes - 2/16/10

We will have our regular troop meeting tonight.  However, the church is having its pancake dinner tonight, so we will probably be meeting downstairs in one of the classrooms.  Tonight we will be working on Scout Skills.  We anticipate a change in merit badge requirements this coming year and if the rumors are true, Cooking merit badge will become a required badge.  Jim Morris is going to start working on some of the requirements for this merit badge as we can fit them in.  So don't be surprised if you start seeing more cooking things being demonstrated and worked on during the upcoming troop meeting and outings.

Philmont Money is due tonight.  $385 is due to cover the next Philmont Payment and deposit on the air fare.

Seabase Monday is due tonight (if you have not paid me yet).  $385 is due to cover the last Seabase payment and a deposit on airfare and hotel.

Thanks to everyone that came out to the service project on Saturday and to Scout Sunday!

You should have talked to your patrol leader by now if you intend to go on one of the outings on the first weekend in March.  Please come tonight knowing if you can participate.  The two options are:

1) E-Science at Holly Shelter
2) Backpacking, the place is being decided on tonight.

If you are taking E-Science merit badge, then you will want to attend the camping at Holly Shelter in order to pass off those requirements.  Others are welcome but will be expected to work on the same projects as the E-Science people.  We will probably have some Cub Scouts with us at Holly Shelter.
If you are going to Philmont, then you should consider going on the Backpacking weekend.

We will need plenty of adults to help us out in March since we will be splitting the troop into two groups for camping.

Philmont Update

We still have places open for Philmon! There are places for 8 youth and 2 adults. We may not add any more adults unless we add a youth. If you know of someone out side of the troop who is interested please have them contact me (bemarron at nc.rr.com, 919-602-4512).

Our trek begins August 3 and ends August 15. If you are interested and have not signed up please let me know.

The second payment of $285.00 will be due no later than Feb 22. Please pay me with checks made out to the troop

If money is an issue then please remember that scholarship application to attend are available on the Philmont web site due Jan 31 and, also, please let me know.

The current plan is to fly out Monday August 2 and return August 15. Mr. McGinnis has been looking into the travel arrangements and we can book on Southwest for $350 or $450 depending on flying into Denver of Albuquerque. Backpacks fly fre! We will need 1/2 of the plane fare around Feb 25.

Check out the Philmont web site for possible trek possibilities (look at 2009 treks and talk to past attendees), recommended equipment and Get in Shape (6 month to trek).

If you are signed up for Philmont or want to receive e-mails about Philmont from me please let me know what e-mail address or addresses to use for the Philmont distribution list.
